Subways and trains are a routine part of everyday life for many. So routine, that some passengers appear able to be practically asleep while boarding and departing their daily stops. As a kid in Chicago, riding the train never felt mundane to me. Growing up in a traditional and conservative Yemeni family, it would be an understatement to say that my freedoms were limited as a young girl.  I still remember how liberating it felt to ride the bus alone for the first time.  Taking the train was even more exhilarating. They were gateways to an independence and greater mobility I would later experience as an adult- unfortunately at the sacrifice of being estranged from my family for years. I am still fascinated by life on buses, trains, trams, etc.;  moving capsules that closely, but temporarily, hold together a mix of strangers with completely different lives.
